Description

  • Lewis Wickes Hine
  • FREIGHT BRAKEMAN, NEW YORK CENTRAL LINES
  • Gelatin silver print
oversized, warm-toned, annotated 'Photograph by Lewis W. Hine / Hastings on Hudson, N. Y.' in ink on the reverse, 1921 ('The Railroaders: Work Portraits by Lewis W. Hine,' Survey Graphic, 29 October 1921, Vol. XLVII, p. 161; Men at Work, unpaginated; Gutman, p. 35; America and Lewis Hine, p. 63)

Provenance

Originally from the collection of Allen H. Eaton, a trustee of New York's Ethical Culture School, and an employee of the Russell Sage Foundation, where Hine had an important exhibition of his photographs in 1929

Condition

This early large-format photograph is on warm-toned, lightly-textured, double-weight paper with a faint surface sheen. The majority of the image is in very good condition. The print is trimmed to the image, and there is minor wear along the edges and corners. There is a band of light brown discoloration (at its widest, intruding into the image 1/2-inch) running along the left and lower edges, with corresponding discoloration visible on the reverse of the print. Dampstaining, which has created areas of light brown discoloration and faint tidelines, is visible along the upper edge. On the reverse of the print are droplets along the upper edge, a faint tideline where the print is annotated, and soiling overall.

Catalogue Note

This image was among a series of railroad work portraits in the inaugural issue of Survey Graphic in October 1921.  It was one of five images by Hine in the April 1924 National Arts Club exhibition for which he was awarded the medal for photography, his first recognition in a fine art context.
