- ELECTRIFICATION OF THE NEW YORK CENTRAL HUDSON LINE
- Album of cyanotype photographs
an album of photographs documenting the Electrification of the Hudson Rail Line in Manhattan, Yonkers, Hastings, Tuckahoe, Irvington, White Plains, Scarsdale, and Mt. Vernon, comprising approximately 190 cyanotypes and 2 printing-out-paper prints, each titled, numbered, and/or dated in the negative, 1907-11. Folio, leatherette, postbound
Condition
A detailed report for each of the many prints is beyond the scope of this condition report; those wishing condition reports on individual specific plates are welcome to contact the Photographs Department. The strength and richness of the tonality of the individual cyanotypes varies throughout the album, from good to excellent. There are a number of panoramas within the album, which consist of 2 prints hinged on the reverse with cloth tape. First-hand examination is recommended.
The margins are age-appropriately darkened to varying degrees. The paper is brittle, and the margin edges of the photographs are somewhat fragile. There are small tears, creases and losses at the margin edges and corners. The front cover of the album is lacking and the first several prints are detached from the binding. The rear cover is worn.

Catalogue Note
In 1902, following the fatal collision of two steam locomotives in the Park Avenue Tunnel, the New York Central Hudson River Railroad undertook a 10-year project to electrify rail service. The photographs in the present album offer remarkably complete documentation of this project. Beginning with the construction of the new Grand Central Terminal, the photographs show the implementation of the electrified third rail along today’s Hudson and Harlem lines into Westchester County. Initiated by William J. Wilgus, the New York Central’s chief engineer, the entire project – comprising demolition, new construction, and electrification – cost an estimated $80 million. Electrification was a major step forward in the modernization of rail travel and redefined greater New York’s commuter transportation.
This album comes originally from the collection of Packy McCabe, a railroad surveyor.
