Description

  • Frederick Henry Evans
  • POPLAR TREES, FRANCE
  • Gelatin silver print
platinum print, on a quintuple paper and gold foil mount, signed by the photographer and with his monogram blindstamp on the mount, 1921 (Lyden, pl. 6)

Condition

This rich, finely detailed platinum print is in generally very good condition. It is mounted at all 4 corners, and there is miniscule edge wear. There is a small, 1/4-inch rust-colored area along the lower right edge of the image. Minimal evidence of foxing is visible upon very close examination of the photograph. Light but pervasive foxing is visible overall on the paper and foil mounts. The final mount is textured cream-colored paper with a deckled edge. There is some soiling and appropriate age-darkening at the periphery and on the reverse of the final mount. Also on the reverse, the following is written in an unidentified hand in pencil: 'FHE,' '12' [circled], and 'mounting suggests c. 1894/5.'
