Description

  • Josef Sudek
  • 'SVATY VIT' (SAINT VITUS)
  • 15 gelatin silver prints
(Prague: Drustevní práce, 1928, an edition of 120), a portfolio of 15 photographs of Saint Vitus Cathedral, each mounted to heavy Van Gelder paper, a sequential numerical stamp on the reverse, in modern individual mats, 1928; together with the printed title, plate list, introduction by Jaroslav Durych in Czech and French, and colophon, signed by the photographer and Durych and numbered '11' in ink.  Folio, modern black cloth folio with flaps, the original stiff front wrapper with red and silver lion design inset; in a modern clamshell box

Condition

These prints, on paper with a nearly matte surface, are in generally good to very good condition. All show some degree of warmth in the highlights; on some prints, this is quite pronounced. Each print is mounted to heavy white paper with a deckled edge. There is some age-darkening along the mount edges and light soiling on the reverse. There is light soiling to the front matter, and occasional creasing at the edges. There are scuffs to the original black paper front wrapper, which has been inset in a modern linen portfolio with flaps. There are fingerprints on the inside flaps. The portfolio is in a modern black cloth clamshell, which is somewhat soiled and shows wear along the joints.
