Catalogue Note
The photographs in this and the following two lots come from the definitive photographic portrait of the young Arnold Schwarzenegger by filmmaker and photographer George Butler. In images of Schwarzenegger in his early body-building years, and in his now-legendary documentary film Pumping Iron, Butler charted the course of the Austrian Oak in his conquests around the world.
The life-sized images offered here are from a series of photographs taken by Butler that were the genesis of Schwarzenegger’s formidable reputation. They are among the best photographs of a body builder ever made and were crucial to the rise of the Schwarzenegger legend.
