Description

  • William Garnett
  • APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS, PENNSYLVANIA
  • Gelatin silver print
flush-mounted, signed in pencil, dated and annotated in ink, and with a Museum of Modern Art loan label and the photographer's credit, reproduction rights, and copyright stamps on the reverse, 1957, printed no later than 1963 (Owings, The American Aesthetic, pp. 40-1)

Condition

This photograph, on paper with a semi-glossy surface and flush-mounted to sturdy board, is in generally very good to excellent condition. The photographer deliberately trimmed this print to 19.5 by 8 inches. In raking light, tiny deposits of the photographer's original retouching, as well as a few insignificant superficial surface scratches, are visible overall. The tip of the upper right corner is lightly bumped. On the reverse of the mount, '#38.0-1744-ABL' is written in ink and pencil and the photographer's copyright stamp is dated '63' in ink. The reverse of the mount shows minimal soiling. The typed loan number on the MoMA loan label on the reverse of the mount is '63.1380 Garnett.' This photograph was loaned to The Museum of Modern Art for possible inclusion in the 1963 exhibition 'The Photographer and the American Landscape.' The exhibition checklist, however, indicates that it was not ultimately included in the exhibition. This photograph is reproduced on a double page spread in Nathaniel Alexander Owings 1969 publication, 'The American Aesthetic' (pp. 40-1).
