Description

  • Baron Adolf de Meyer
  • THE SKIER
  • Gelatin silver print
warm-toned, with debossed margins, the photographer's stylized signature in pencil in the margin, his archive stamp, with number '019' in pencil, and stamped 'Enlargement by Eastman Kodak Stores' on the reverse, circa 1920, probably printed in 1940

Condition

This luminous warm-toned print, on thick double-weight paper with a velvety surface, is in generally excellent condition. The photographer's stylized signature is smudged at the 'R.' This print has wide cream-colored margins, and the margin corners are lightly bumped or creased. On the reverse of the print, there are thin yellowed adhesive remnants along the upper and left edges. Also on the reverse is a small paper label with number '51' in ink. There is minor soiling from handling on the reverse.

Catalogue Note

This photograph was almost certainly made for De Meyer’s 1940 exhibition at the Hollywood home of actor Edward G. Robinson.  As De Meyer had destroyed much of his earlier work, new large-format prints were specially made for the exhibition on warm-toned Eastman Kodak paper.
