Condition

This silver print is in good general condition. The four corners and partially the upper and lower edges are worn. With two pinholes at the left edge and one at the right edge in the center, with a strong fold of approx. 12 cm in the lower quadrant and with a fold of approx. 10 cm at the right edge in the center, with light scratches and tiny losses of the gelatin layer in the lower right quadrant; with very light surface dirt.

Catalogue Note

Cette nature morte est le fruit d’une commande d’un ami d’Auguste Sander qui dirigeait une quincaillerie à Cologne. L’œuvre était accrochée au mur de l’entreprise depuis les années 1950. Ce tirage, inhabituellement grand, a été monogrammé, ce qui nous renvoie à un style plus ancien et plus fréquent des années 1920. En effet, le parallèle avec les natures mortes industrielles de Albert Renger-Patzsch prend tout son sens. Ici, la composition et le choix des matériaux de Sander reflètent clairement la Nouvelle Objectivité d’entre-deux-guerres. August Sander est également précurseur dans la manière de composer puisque nous retrouvons des influences parmi les natures mortes d'Irving Penn dès les années 1950.
