Catalogue Note

Martinelli painted a number of half or bust length female figures representing saints, allegorical ideals, ancient queens and, as in this painting, mythological subjects.  The Three Graces, personifying charm and beauty, were often associated with Venus and sometimes depicted as her attendants.  This painting is considered to be a mature work by the artist and has been dated to the early 1650s.
