Catalogue Note
This Holy Family has been examined by Stella Rudolph, who plans to publish it in her forthcoming monograph on Maratta. The picture is a classic example by the artist, who was one of the leading personalities in Rome in the late 17th century, and one of the last great masters of Baroque Classicism. This painting was executed for Modesto Scaramella, whose descendants later owned the Casale Fumia with property overlooking the Via Nettunense in Rome. Numerous pentimenti are found in the work, and help illustrate Marratta's inventiveness and creativity as a draughtsman and painter.
