Description
- Charles Théodore Frère
- The Banks of the Nile
- signed TH. FRERE lower right
- oil on canvas
- 80 by 125.5cm., 31½ by 49¾in.
Provenance
Sale: Christie's, New York, 12 April 2007, lot 57
Condition
The canvas has not been lined. There is a small puncture in the sky in the upper left quadrant (visible in the catalogue illustration), a pattern of hairline craquelure overall, and a couple of very minor spots of paint flaking in one of the water carriers. Ultra-violet light reveals some retouchings in the sky, notably in a circa 9 by 9cm area near the centre of the upper framing edge, strokes in an area above and to the left of the central tree, a number of strokes of strengthening in the darker pigments of the bank and river, and some other more minor scattered strokes. The overall appearance of the painting is good.
Presented in a decorative Orientalist-style frame.
