Description

  • Ludwig Blum
  • Herod's Gate, Jerusalem
  • signed and dated L. Blum / Jerusalem 1932 lower right
  • oil on canvas
  • 81 by 101cm., 32 by 39¾in.

Provenance

Private Collection, Brno

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. Ultra-violet light reveals only minimal signs of retouching, primarily a couple of tiny spots of retouching near the centre of the sky. Some of the pigments either side of the gate appear to fluoresce when viewed under U.V. light, however this certainly appears to correspond to the artist's pigments rather than retouching. This painting is in very good, virtually original condition, clean and ready to hang. Presented in a silver-gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

Herod's Gate (bab al-Zahra in Arabic), is in the Old City's northern wall in Jerusalem's Muslim Quarter. It is among the city's newest gates, opened in 1875 to provide a passageway to the neighbourhoods which were beginning to develop north of the Old City.
