Condition

Panel is uncradled and slightly bowed from right to left. the paint surface has been generally well retained with good detail in most of the costume. there is noticeable thinness in the dark background of the bodice and sleeves of costume. very little fluoresces under ultraviolet. there are a few tiny dots of repaint on her forehead and chest. In a black wood frame with gilt inner and outer rim and a stylized gilt design.

Catalogue Note

Madeleine de L'Aubespine was the daughter of Secretary of State, Claude de L'Aubespine, and married to Nicolas de Neufville, who later also became Secretary of State under Charles IX and Henry III. Renowned within aristocratic circles and favored by Catherine de' Medici, she was also an avid poet and author of humanist philosophy.
