Condition
The painting is in good condition overall. The panel is flat and appears to be made up of a single, horizontal board, beveled on the lower and right edges. There is small loss to the lower left corner of approximately 1/4 by 1 in. though this is not visible on the face when framed. There are two vertical cross form batons on the reverse, one at the left and one at the right side. A third wedge shaped baton is reinforcing the upper right corner where a fine crack is visible on the face of the panel, running diagonally 5 in. from the upper left edge in the sky. A second very fine crack is visible running 3 in. from the center of the right edge. There is a very minor dent (less than 1/8 in.) in the sky, just below the center of the upper edge. There are one or two very minor discolored spots of varnish in the sky as visible in the catalogue image.
The figures and horses in the foreground are well preserved though the paint surface is a little thinned and abraded in the background, notably in the horse and recumbent figure at left.
Inspection under UV reveals some old areas of repaint in the background, and some strengthened areas, including the abraded horse and figure at left, the body of the central rearing horse and the helmet of the armored figure in a red sash at right.
The painting is ready to hang in its present state and is offered in a carved black wooden frame.
