Condition
Canvas has an old relining. Overall picture presents a strong image to the naked eye and could be hung in current state. Some thinness around hair line and in ear. Uv shows a few small scattered retouches in the face but these are cosmetic. Painting has glass covering canvas which can be removed. In a carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note
The sitter was perhaps Anne, sister of Mary Mead who married John Wilkes. This portrait was painted in 1772, with appointments for a "Mrs. Mead" in March and April of that year. Older unmarried ladies were normally called "Mrs" in this period.
