Painting has an old wax relining and surface has been pressed as a result. there are some scattered areas of thinness such as in parts of hair and costume and in sky at upper left, and some areas with heavy craquelure. overall, the painting still reads well and presents a strong image. examination under ultraviolet shows some retouching in sky, in background areas and on both sides of his cloak. the figure looks generally good with just some small retouches on nose and chin.
