Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This painting appears to have an English glue lining. The surface is flat and the paint layer is stable. While this work would not have had any significant amount of impasto, it may be slightly smoother than it was originally. This artist is slightly technically looser than some of his contemporaries, but the condition of the paint layer is very good. As one would expect, there is some thinness in the darker colors of the shadowed knave on the left. The varnish throughout shows some scuffs and unevenness. The palette will brighten if the work is cleaned, and the scuffs in the varnish would be eliminated. Small restorations would have to be reapplied, but the end result would be a great improvement.
