Description

  • Boy playing the flute
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

The canvas appears to have been thinly relined. there is a repaired L-shaped tear that runs from the background at upper left down through left side of figure's hair and across his shoulder to left edge (this is visible to naked eye though not too distracting). a tiny paint loss can be seen in hair at left and a scratch in wrist lower center. there are scattered areas of abrasion in figure and sinking of the darker pigments in background and parts of costume. however, there are still nice passages of paint that remain such as in hair, which has good preservation of detail. the overall figure still reads well and presents a striking image. examination under UV light reveals retouching along tear mentioned above; there are small retouches scattered on face, hand, and white collar; some larger areas of retouching scattered in background, especially at right side.
