Condition

Canvas is relined. There is a tight craquelure pattern which could possibly be relaxed with a fresh lining. The surface is dirty, which is likely the result of an older discolored varnish. Scattered retouches are visible under UV both above and below the older varnish, but these are mostly isolated to the sky and some dotting along the outline of the cliffs. A possible repaired puncture is located in the middle sky. This painting could benefit from a light cleaning and fresh varnish. In a carved gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

According to Helen Langdon (see Literature), this painting is one of Rosa's earliest works, executed when the artist painted directly from nature and in the style of his Neapolitan compatriot, Micco Spadaro.
