Description
- Joseph Ducreux
- Portrait of a young woman
- Black chalk heightened with white chalk on blue paper;
signed in pen and brown ink lower right: J. Ducreux
Condition
Hinged to the mount at the upper margin. Blue paper has faded, evident where the blue is stronger around the outer edges where it has been protected by previous matting. There are some small nicks/tears at the upper margin. A few light brown/gray stains along the right margin. There is a repaired tear at the upper margin in the center. Overall chalk is very strong and vibrant.

Catalogue Note
Ducreux, a succesful portraitist at the Court of King Louis XVI of France, was Maurice Quentin de La Tour's only pupil. Like La Tour, Ducreux had a natural ability to capture the likeness of his sitter. For more portraits by Ducreux see Neil Jeffares, Dictionary of Pastellists before 1800, London 2006, pp. 163-173.
