Catalogue Note
This handsome study of the head of a young man, sensitively and vigorously drawn in red chalk, the artist's preferred medium, has been recognized as a preparatory study for the central figure in the foreground of Vanloo's painting, La lecture espagnole, now in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (fig. 1). The painting is a pendant to La conversation espagnole, also in the Hermitage, both commissioned in 1754 by the famous Madame Geoffrin. Both paintings were exhibited at the Salon of 1761 and sold in 1772 to Catherine the Great of Russia. The immediacy of the present drawing, where clearly the young man is reading aloud, with his mouth slightly open and his gaze focused, show it is probably done from life. The skilful handling of the red chalk creates the necessary modulation and variety in the rendering of the man's face and exuberant strokes define the curls of his hair.
