Condition

A young woman holding her skirt: sheet cut down and part of her head has been silhouetted against backing sheet. A tear in the sheet at the level of her elbow and small area has been made up lower right. Red chalk still strong. Man smoking a pipe: Top left corner missing. Loss at lower margin. A small dark brown stainn at the level of the pipe, a few other lighter brown stains around the sheet. Red chalk still strong. Gentleman seen from behind: laid down. Cut and part of hat silhouetted against backing sheet. Strip of paper has been added below the lower margin. Red chalk still strong.

See note to lot 84.  The figure of a young woman holding her skirt can be found in a pen and ink study in the Louvre, Deux femmes drapées, where we see the same young woman in reverse on the left of the drawing (fig. 1). The same woman is also to be seen in a counterproof of a red chalk landscape, Vue d'un torrent, in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Besançon (fig.2).2
