Condition

Hinged to mount at upper margin. In general the drawing within the circle is in good condition, medium remains strong and vibrant. There are no condition issues in the areas surrounding the circle. There is light scattered foxing, more concentrated at the upper section, above the circle. The lower left corner has been made up and there is a repaired tear at the lower margin in the centre, approx 2cm long, there is also another small repaired tear at the lower right corner as well as a circular brown stain.

Catalogue Note

This is one of a number of designs that relate to Carlone's ceiling fresco of the Assumption of the Virgin in the church of S. Maria degli Angeli in Brescia (fig. 1). Some of these drawings have been described as the Coronation of the Virgin and some as the Assumption, but the inclusion of the crown in the upper left of the composition suggests the former is here a more appropriate title.  Two other related drawings were sold at Sotheby's, in 1972 and 1980,2 of which the latter is closest to the present composition.  Another study by Carlone for the ceiling in Brescia is in Ottawa.3
