Catalogue Note

George Knox (op.cit., 1980) proposes that these two studies by Domenico could be preparatory for the figure of St. John in one of the two paintings representing The Deposition which are now in National Gallery, London. These paintings are generally considered to be the product of a collaboration between Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, and dated around 1745-50.  Knox also suggested that these may be rejected studies for one of the fourteen canvases of the Via Crucis in the church of S. Polo, Venice.
