Condition

Once glued around the margins, the paper has now buckled and wrinkled. Two traces of old folds running horizontally at the top and in the middle of the sheet. Paper has slightly discolored. Slight foxing especially at the top margin.

Catalogue Note

These three head studies seem closely inspired by the work of Ribera but do not correspond to any known work by him.  The artist may have conceived them for an engraving.  The drawing is accurately executed with a delicate use of the red chalk.  The name of Cesare Fracanzano has been suggested, on the basis of comparison with paintings such as The Satyr's Family and Two Satyrs with a winged putto.1
