Description

  • Portrait of a family in an interior
  • Gouache and watercolor over traces of black chalk on vellum

Condition

The vellum is laid down on board, and framed in a French frame, circa 1820. There are some minor wrinkles at the lower left and upper left corners. Also some small tears at the edges, where there are also some slight losses to the pigment. On the lower right of the girl's dress there are two minor water-type stains. A slight nick to the surface at the upper right corner. Otherwise the condition is excellent, the surface good and the colours still strong.

Catalogue Note

The artist responsible for this delightful group portrait is unknown, but the fine, miniature-like style and combinations of strong colors seem to be inspired by the work of Liotard.  The costumes date the portrait to the mid-1770s.
