Laid down. Overall in good condition, paper still blue and media fresh. Small light brown stains to the right of the kneeling Christ and some oxidation, some along the lower and left margin along the framing lines.

Catalogue Note
This finished study, squared for transfer, could be related, with some differences, to Santi di Tito's only known altarpiece of the subject formerly in the church of S. Maria Maddalena dei Pazzi, Florence (fig. 1). The painting is signed and dated 1591. The composition of the final painting is very similar but reversed: the figure of Christ is kneeling in prayer and the sleeping apostles are more preeminent in the foreground. A closely similar representation of the subject, in the same media, appears in the background of Santi di Tito's drawing Christ washing the feet of the Apostles.1 A weak copy of the present work is in the Uffizi.2
