Catalogue Note

Other comparable figure studies by Horemans are in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.1  In one of these Edinburgh drawings (A Physician examining a Phial, inv. no. D2766), we see in the upper right corner an isolated study of a hand holding an object, very comparable to the separate study of the gentleman's hand and glove on the recto of the present sheet.  The verso, with its various studies, further emphasizes these drawings as 'working' sheets.  As Keith Andrews noted when cataloguing the studies in Edinburgh, chalk sketches such as these were surely made as preparatory studies for figures in Horemans' paintings.
