Catalogue Note

This sketchbook sheet is dated by Beck (loc. cit.) circa 1628/29.  Van Goyen used it as the basis for a painting formerly in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Seward Johnson, sold in these Rooms, 8 January 1981, lot 15.1  In the painting, the artist enlarged the small bush on the rise to the left of the center, placed cottages behind this foliage, and added three figures standing at the entrance to the bridge.  Another version of the drawing is in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh.2
