Catalogue Note

As the inscription on the verso suggests, this drawing can be dated to David's self-imposed exile in Brussels prior to his death in 1825.  Rosenberg and Prat believe this work to have been executed around 1819-1823 and compare the facial expression of the woman to that of another black chalk head study, signed by David, and now in the Musée Thomas Dobrée, Nantes (inv. 990-2-1).
