Catalogue Note
This view of the monumental Piazza Prato della Valle, the construction of which was commissioned by the statesman Andrea Memmo in the late eighteenth century, looks south through the park. The artist's viewpoint must have been from the Palazzo Angeli, Memmo's residence, or nearby. To the left is the 10th-century Benedictine abbey of Saint Giustina, depicted carefully with its bell tower and the domes of the basilica rising up behind the austere 17th-century facade. The garden is lined with seventy-eight statues portraying famous citizens, including Memmo himself.
