Description

  • Venetian School, early 18th century
  • Achilles Lamenting the Death of Patroclus
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Collection of J. L. Van Maurik, Westerhoutpark, Haarlem (according to an inscription on reverse).

Condition

The canvas has been relined and is in stable condition. The paint surface is even and well-preserved, there are some areas of minor paint cracking: along the upper margin and the centre. The varnish is dirty. There are scattered missing flakes of paint throughout, some of which have been retouched, others not. Inspection under UV light shows small areas of re strengthened paint: above Patroclus' arm (4x2 cm), by the arm of the secondary figure in the right background (3x5 cm), and above the shoulder of Achilles. Otherwise just small retouchings to lost paint flakes.
