Description

  • Justus van Egmont
  • Portrait of a lady, said to be the Marchioness of Montchevreuil, three-quarter-length, beside a fountain
  • oil on canvas

Condition

The canvas has a relining that has been sensitively applied and has not flattened the paint surface, much of the original impasto well preserved. An old seam is visible running horizontally 5 inches from the upper margin, there are no damages visible to the naked eye. The varnish appears dirty and uneven. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered localised strengthenings throughout, mainly in the darker tones of the background, some in the fabric of her wrap, a small 3cm square of retouchings on her chin, and other patches on her collarbone below her pearls, and above the neckline of her dress on her left side. Her face and bodice have had virtually no other intervention, and overall the painting is in excellent condition.
