Description

  • Flemish School, circa 1550
  • Scenes from Exodus: The sacrifice of the Passover lamb, with Moses closing the path through the Red Sea and the Egyptian army in the distance
  • oil on panel

Condition

The panel is in good condition. It has two horizontal supports on the reverse. There is an old vertical repaired split running the length of the panel 3 inches from the right edge, visible to the naked eye. The paint surface is stable and has a degree of fine craquelure throughout. There are some retouchings and strengthenings throughout, the most significant of which appear to be concentrated in the darker tones of the sky, the darker tones in the clothing of the gathered figures in the foreground and in the paint defining the horizon of the middle ground. The varnish is patchy but the painting is in overall fair condition.
