Description
- English School, 18th Century
- Portrait of a Lady
- oil on canvas
Condition
The paint surface is stable and the canvas is relined and secure. Inspection under ultra violet reveals one campaign of recent restoration, consisting of only very few sensitively executed retouchings. A second older and more extensive campaign of restoration is also visible and is confined mainly to the darker tones in the fabric of her dress and to some of the flesh tones, such as the right of the ladies neck, the bridge of her nose, jaw line, left arm and décolletage. An analysis of the restoration in the background is harder as the varnish fluoresces in a milky way, making it opaque. There are some losses along the top margin, on her neck, and at the bottom right of the canvas.
