Description
- Andrea Mantegna
- The Madonna and Child with Saint Jerome
- oil on poplar panel
Provenance
Signora Cossutti (according to an inscription on the reverse of the panel: Signora Cussutti/Mario Pagano 46)
Condition
The thick panel is uncradled, and there has been a degree of movement in the upper section, measuring about 4 inches from the top margin. This movement has resulted in a visible crack line on the paint surface. The panel however seems stable, and the paint surface secure. The varnish is dirty and uneven and there is visible craquelure throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered minor retouchings and strengthenings especially in the darker tones, outlines, background to the left of Christ's face and in the face of St Joseph. In fair overall condition.
