Circle of Pierre Jacques-Antoine Volaire

The canvas has a fairly recent relingin which is still sound. The painting is in reasonably good overall condition. There has been some restoration to some old tears and damages: the largest a 6 x 1 cm vertical damage in the sky upper left, a slightly larger L-shaped area of damage in the lower left centre foreground, and an old vertical damage 7 x 2 cm in the cente of the foreground. Much of the darks in the foreground have been strengthened, as have the outlines of some of the figures, especially in the lower right corner, and the darker parts of the volcanic smoke have also been reinforced. The restoration is not distracting and the varnish remains clear and even. Offered with a gilt plaster frame with oak, key and laurel mouldings, all in good condition.
