Description
- Pieter Boddingh van Laer
- An italianate landscape with travellers resting beside ruins
- bears signature and date lower right: P.V. Laer /1684
- oil on panel
Condition
The colours are warmer than the catalogue illustration suggests. The panel support consists of two horizontal planks, which have developed a noticeable converse bow, and which are held by a half cradle on the reverse. The panel join has now opened slightly, and there is a secondary split appearing beneath it to the right hand side. The paint surface is in very good overall condition, with no sign of major damage or wear. Inspection under ultra violet light reveals only limited retouchings along the panel join and some scattered and minor local repairs. The vanrish is even but a little opaque.
Offered with a later gilt wood frame with acanthus and bead decoration, in good condition.
