Description

  • German School, 17th century
  • Still life with of carnations and other flowers in a gilt vase, a parrot and a beetle
  • oil on panel

Condition

Painted on a flat single panel which is structurally sound but for an minor old split which shows through on the paint surface in the background upper left. The paint surface is in fair condition, there is some old minor flaking and movement now stabilised in the paint surface centre right and left, and there is evidence of discoloured retouching in the tabletop and buds of the flowers. There is an old discoloured varnish and surface dirt overall and a very fine craquelure visible under a raking light in the upper right. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the aforementioned retouching and reveals some additional minor scattered cosmetic work running up he grain in the background. Otherwise the discoloured varnish makes inspection difficult. Offered in a painted gold and wood frame in good overall condition.
