Description

  • Hieronymus Galle the Elder
  • Still life with carnations, lilies, peonies and other flowers in a glass vase
  • oil on canvas, in a carved and gilt wood frame

Condition

The canvas has a heavy and very old relining, which has much pressed the paint surface. The painting is overall in very moderate condition. The painting has had a history of flaking in the past, for many areas, notably across the lower foreground as well as the upper parts of the background, have extensive old restoration. There are in addition a number of old repaired lacunae, which are clearly visible to the naked eye: the largest a 5 cm vertical old tear upper left, but also a good number of losses of 1 x 2 cm or more around the upper parts of the blooms, and around the bottom of the glass vase. The central areas of the flowers themselves are much better preserved, although the yellow pigments have now faded. The old repairs are quite crude and now very discoloured. Offerd in a later carved and gilt English swept wood frame, in good condition.
