Description

  • Adriaen Hendricksz. Verboom
  • A wooded landscape with travellers on a road by a river
  • oil on panel
  • 55 by 74cm.

Provenance

Clemens Wenzel, Duke of Saxony, Archbishop-Elector of Trier (1739-1812);
Anoymous sale ('The Property of a Gentleman'), London, Sotheby's, 7 July 1982, lot 271 (as Verboom);
Anonymous sale, Vienna, Dorotheum, 17 October 2007, lot 296 (as Jan Vermeer), where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

Made up of two horizontal panels with a beautifully smooth join. They are flat and stable, without need of cradling. The paint surface is covered with a thick varnish to protect it. The paint is well- preserved, with brush strokes in the sky, and each leaf in the foliage discernible. Colours are rich and deep and highly evocative of the forest scene on the left. Inspection under UV light reveals a small patch of retouching on the left edge, measauring 3x2cm. There is a very small spot retouching around the face of the seated woman. A few scattered spot retouchings throughout the landscape, and also in the sky. A tiny repair to the tip of the boat, and to an area along the river bank that has had minor restructuring. This lot is offered in a wooden frame painted dark brown with simple decoration, in fine condition, albeit slightly worn with age.
