Description
- A river estuary with small Dutch vessels on choppy water
- oil on panel
Condition
This uncradled panel is beautifully flat, with only a very slight inward movement in the uppermost part. There is an old, very fine horizontal split in the wood, 19 cm from the upper edge, which has been carefully repaired and overpainted.
The paint surface is in wonderful condition, with the crest of the waves, the details of the rigging and figures in the boats well-preserved, sharp and clear. There is minimal wear along the very edge of all sides, due to effects of frame rubbing over time. Inspection under Ultraviolet light reveals very little restoration: a small area of old retouching along the upper right edge and tiny flecks of cosmetic repainting throughout. The stunning landscape in the background to the right is untouched and beautifully preserved.
This lot is sold in a wood frame painted dark, in good condition.
