Provenance

Sale, Cranham, Chorley's, 28 October 2013, lot 200.

Condition

The canvas has been relined and does not require attention. The paint is stable with no sign of flaking. Visible to the naked eye are discoloured (darker) specks of repair along the right hand edge, two small areas on the lower left hand side, a three small specks on the fur collar. Inspection under Ultraviolet light reveals tiny dots of cosmetic retouching in the upper part of the canvas. The knotted ribbon above the coat-of-arms is a later addition. There is an old uneven varnish that appears slightly blotchy but this is not visible to the naked eye. The sitter's face and hands are largely untouched except for two cases of restrengthening in the darker shadows on her face. The sitter retains a fantastic sense of immediacy and presence that would only be enhanced with a general cleaning, especially of the blacks and browns of her clothing, which have sunk into the canvas over time. This lot is sold in a simple wood and gilded framce, with flaking paint and a few knocks. It is in need of some cosmetic attention, but is structurally sound.
