Description

  • Willem Key
  • Portrait of a gentleman wearing a black beret and a white collar
  • inscribed upper left: with the symbol of a rose
  • oil on panel, a fragment

Condition

The panel has been cradled, presumably to accomodate a horizontal split which runs across the width of the picture just below the sitters shoulders. This split has re-opened and is now visible to the naked eye. There are some minor recent losses just above the man's eyebrow and on his collar which can be seen in the catalogue illustration. Inspection under ultra violet light shows that the painting has been quite heavily repainted in much of the background and the sitters black costume. The flesh tones and beard are rather better preserved and here the restoration is combined to local retouchings. The varnish layer is a little uneven. This lot is offered in a modern stained wood frame with a gilt sight edge.
