George Romney

To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of George Romney’s work by Alex Kidson.

The canvas is unlined and the picture is well preserved. There are areas of vertical craquelure due to the movement of the canvas. There is a 2 cm tear in the canvas lower left, which is visible in the catalogue illustration. The paint surface is still thick where pigments are applied, and energetic brushstrokes are well-preserved. This lot is offered in an original carved Louis XIV lime wood frame with elaborate crowning cartouche, some small knocks and a loss to the cartouche.
