Provenance

Sir Berkley Sheffield, 6th Bt. (1876–1946), Normanby Park, Lincolnshire;
His sale, London, Christie’s, 16 July 1943, lot 149, for £126, to John Vincent Sheffield;
Thence by descent.

Condition

The canvas has recently been relined and the paint surface cleaned and restored. Overall the paint surface is in good condition. There is an old vertical seam or fold in the canvas 69 cm from the left edge. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows a repaired vertical 24 cm tear centre right, but otherwise restoration consists only very careful and meticulous strengthenings and retouchings throughout the sky and figures, but no major repairs. The restoration has been well carried and is not obtrusive to the naked eye and the painting will require no further attention. Offered in a 19th century wood frame with gilt plaster mouldings, many knocks and damages.
