Description

  • Anthonis Mor
  • Portrait of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy (1528-1580)
  • oil on oak panel

Provenance

Probably bought by Henry Compton (1719-1786) of Minstead Manor House, Hampshire (as a portrait of Robert Sackville, 2nd Earl of Dorset);
Thence by descent to the present owner.

Condition

The support is made up of four vertical panels. The picture is in fair overall condition. There has been a degree of movement along all joins, along which there is some retouching and small losses. The varnish appears a little patchy and somewhat discoloured. There is one area of loss on the right of the bottom margin measuring 3cm squared and visible in the catalogue image. The paint around this area will require stabilizing. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals that the varnish is very uneven and blotchy and it fluoresces in a milky opaque way. There are scattered retouchings throughout, and some indication that the dark tones of the background has been repainted. Offered in an elaborate carved and gilt wood frame, in good condition.
