Condition

The panel has an old cradle and is flat and stable. There is a very fine old split in the panel running horizontally roughly 15 cm from the top edge, not obvious to the naked eye. The painting is dirty and the varnish now discoloured. There is a tiny surface dent in the trees. The painting is in overall very good condition indeed. The river, boats, and buildings are all beautifully-preserved with very little wear and many delicate areas still intact, allowing the under drawing beneath to show through. Inspection under Ultra violet light reveals only scattered and minor local retouchings. Offered with a modern ebonised wood frame with ripple mouldings in the Dutch style.

Catalogue Note

A closely related etching, entitled La Meuse, is recorded as having been sold Paris, Drouot, 3 March 1879, lot 19. The etching seemingly represents the same locale, a river bank on the right, with some ramshackle houses, a mature gnarled oak tree and a moored unrigged fishing pink.  Both images have the same broad stretch of water running to the horizon in the centre left of the composition, with a small windmill and sailing boat in the distance.
