Description
- The penitent Saint Jerome in a landscape
- oil on oak panel
Condition
The oak panel is flat and uncradled, with a very slight convex bow. It is supported by two metal struts affixed to the reverse. The paint surface is dirty and covered by a yellowed varnish. It is in good condition overall, with details remaining and under drawing visible in the foreground, in the architecture of the landscape and in the saint's head. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows an uneven varnish and old retouching in the sky upper right. Otherwise restoration is limited to only small scattered retouchings in the tree along the right hand margin and minor repairs to small knocks elsewhere.
Offered in a wooden frame painted faux-marble and with a gilt sight-edge, in good condition.
