Circle of Lorenzo di Credi

Oslo, Kunstnernes Hus, May 1975, no. 3 (as by 'unknown artist, Florentine').

The panel is cradled. There are a number of splits in the wood: 1) a horizontal split across the whole panel, 9.5 cm. from the upper edge 2) a horizontal split across the whole panel, 7 cm. from the lower edge. 3) a inverted L-shaped damage by the child's face 4) a horizontal split extending from the left margin, measuring 4 cm. 5) two curved hairline cracks along lower right and left edges 6) a horizontal hairline crack by the hand of the angel on the left, measuring 3 cm. There are tiny repaired knocks to the paints surface along the Christ child's back, by the elbow of the angel on the right, on Christ child's forehead and the Virgin's forearm. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows retouching to the background and to where the Virgin's necklace joins at the pendant. There is restrengthening to the drapery and hair of the angels, to the hair of the Virgin, and to all aforementioned splits in the wood. This lot is offered in a carved and gilt frame, possibly the original, with wear to the gilding and some knocks, but structurally sound.
